Coco Chanel was renowned for merging both replicated and genuine fine gemstones in her jewelled pieces, which was innovative during a time when jewellery was always specifically categorised as either fine or costume. When it came to her designs, Coco often took inspiration from the impressive, costly jewels gifted to her by wealthy friends and lovers. The iconic designer was renowned for her modern, functional style and even now we still remember her quintessential suit skirt or little black dress, carefully accessorised with either ropes of pearls or the equally classic pin & brooche. This colour scheme is reflected in one of the brand’s more famous jewellery lines, the Ultra collection, which includes only black and white designs. Although there have been a huge variety of pieces produced over the years, the most classic pins and brooches from the French fashion house generally feature either the iconic CC logo or the camélia flower, which has long been synonymous with the brand and first appeared back in 1933 as a decorative feature on a black suit with white trim. The vintage camélia brooch is made from white or pink fabric and features black rosette tails but more recently there have been pins crafted from suede, wool, leather or gold and silver. The CC brooches are usually always made from precious metals and encrusted with pearls, jewels and coloured glass. Both symbols remain the most popular designs associated with the French fashion house and look typically chic pinned on jackets and dresses a la Coco.
