Few houses make an ugly colour look as intelligent as Prada does, and this FW2007 scarf is a perfect example of Miuccia Prada's famous "ugly chic" approach. A dense black wool seems to have been dipped in some radioactive liquid, and the acid green creeps up through the fibres in a smoky, uneven gradient that looks more like a laboratory accident than an accessory. The effect recalls dip-dye and ink-bleed techniques, the deliberate rawness of the Japanese avant-garde, and the toxic neon of 2000s sci-fi, while the twisted fringe and the tiny black logo patch keep the whole thing in classic Prada understatement. Miuccia has always treated fashion as a form of cultural commentary, mixing industrial materials, bad taste and intellectual references, and this is the kind of piece that carries that idea in its smallest object. The saturated lime against black is strong enough to lift a plain coat, a grey knit or an all-black outfit, and it sits easily with the current taste for archive Prada, Y2K colour and gorpcore-meets-luxury styling. Wear it looped at the neck, tucked into a trench or tied to a bag. A cool, collectible piece for lovers of archive Prada, avant-garde accessories and statement winter scarves.
