Today we present an exceptional piece from our COT Celebrity Collection: a Stührling Original Apocalypse 160 Classic chronograph wristwatch that belonged to and was worn by the legendary Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Harry Belafonte. Mr. Belafonte frequently wore this watch.

More than just an artist, Belafonte was a cultural icon—and a passionate watch collector.

Harry Belafonte was one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century: a singer, actor, and visionary activist, his art profoundly influenced popular culture. Known as the "King of Calypso," he introduced Caribbean music to a global audience. His landmark 1956 album, *Calypso*, became the first LP in history to sell over a million copies, thanks in large part to the enduring popularity of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)," a song still widely known today. His charisma, warm stage presence, and magnetic voice made him a true icon, while his film work, notably in *Carmen Jones* and *L'Île au soleil*, paved the way for Black actors in Hollywood.

Belafonte's career was crowned with the highest accolades in the music industry. He won a Grammy Award for Calypso, followed by a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His performances earned him Emmy Awards and Tony Awards, making him one of the few artists to have received the title of "EGOT." In 1989, he was honored by the Kennedy Center, and in 2014, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his profound influence on culture and conscience.

Equally renowned for his activism, Belafonte was a close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a tireless advocate for civil rights, social justice, and humanitarian causes. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, supported the anti-apartheid movement, and worked with UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador. His courageous voice against injustice and his unwavering commitment to equality cemented his legend, not only as an artist but also as a moral figure of his time. Designed in Stührling’s signature architectural style, the Apocalypse 160 Classic combines angular lugs, a screw-down bezel, and a substantial 47 mm diameter, perfectly embodying contemporary sporty energy and luxury.

Its finely textured black honeycomb dial features applied luminescent hour markers, a bold Arabic numeral "12", three subdials for the chronograph and seconds, a framed date window at 4 o'clock, and gold-tone luminescent hands accented by a bright red central chronograph hand. The solid stainless steel case boasts a brushed gold finish, contrasting with the black bezel and deeply knurled crown. An original black rubber strap, signed and textured for optimal comfort and grip, completes the ensemble.

This watch was highly valued by Mr. Bellafonte. It has clearly been worn frequently. It is in good overall condition, despite some signs of wear and fine scratches on the crystal. We have not cleaned or polished the watch, nor have we made any alterations to its exterior. We have left it in its original condition, with its numerous signs of wear. Please contact us if you would like the crystal replaced.
