Baracuta is a historic English clothing brand. Founded in Manchester in 1937, its iconic G9, G4, and G10 jackets have become timeless classics. The G9 remains one of the most famous icons in the history of men's ready-to-wear. It was created by the Miller brothers, specialists in waterproof clothing. Passionate about golf, they decided in the late 1930s to design an ideal jacket for the green. Featuring the distinctive Fraser tartan lining, a red background with white, green, and blue checks, given to the Millers by Lord Fraser, chief of the Lovat clan—a descendant of the same family branch as William I of Scotland, a regular at the Manchester Golf Club—and recognizable by its umbrella motif on the back, the Baracuta G9 was born. Its name? G for golf and 9 for the number of holes: a garment that combined style and functionality, with large pockets for storing balls and elastic cuffs to keep the sleeves in place during the swing. But the jacket quickly gained popularity outside of golf courses: the cult of the G9 exploded in the 1950s thanks to its distribution in the United States, where Ivy League students, enrolled in one of the eight most prestigious and elitist private universities, wore the G9 to stand out from the classic suit and tie. Adored by personalities like James Dean and Frank Sinatra, who adopted it into their wardrobes, in the late 1950s, Elvis Presley wore the Baracuta G9 in the film King Creole, and Steve McQueen was on the cover of Life magazine in 1963 with a flamboyant red G9. In 1964, the Baracuta G9 became universally known as the 'Harrington jacket' thanks to the popularity of Ryan O'Neal, who wore it in the film Peyton Place as Rodney Harrington, the high school heartthrob, with his inseparable jacket. The jacket had already become a cult classic. In recent years, this classic British style, long favored in the golf world, has also been adopted by various youth subcultures, notably the Mods, and became the emblem of several British youth movements in the 1970s and 1980s. From punk to rock, including the skinheads who made it their uniform with shirts, braces, and Dr. Martens boots, the Baracuta G9 has come a long way. And even today, it remains one of the most appreciated garments, especially during the transition from winter to mid-season.
