Schiaparelli cellophane braid bow hat - vintage 1950s

A rare tongue in cheek, archival piece from the Parisian House of Schiaparelli. This wide brimmed hat is made from cellophane wicker - a material utilized by mid-century milliners to achieve that lacquered look. The glossy hues of purple in certain light, but mostly black, is cool put the star here is undoubtedly the dramatic inverted straw bow , attached at the crown and also poking out below.

Obviously, a nod to Schiaparelli’s iconic trompe l’oeil bow, her renowned signature motif which is echoed here - also in a trompe l’oeil effect - through its clever placement & the structural design of this hat.

Two-tone in black (with iridescent tones of purple in certain light as mentioned ) with black straw band an ivory straw trim at the brim, this Schiaparelli piece is a surrealist twist on the classic sunhat. equal parts elegant and eccentric. A true collector’s item from the golden age of couture millinery. But tbh it’s a fierce addition to anyone’s wardrobe now

Circumference measurements approximately 22”

In very good vintage condition. Please note this piece is over 70 yrs old so there maybe some light wear on the materials consistent with age. No visible flaws, damages or signs of alterations.
