Story about the Design:
Cooke’s witty composition frames the carré with meticulously rendered coloured pencils arranged by hue, converging toward a central field of life-like pencil shavings. The trompe-l’œil realism and the hand-lettered “À VOS CRAYONS!” evoke the playful moment that sparked the design: the artist’s child brought him a pile of pencils and asked what to do with them—Cooke answered on silk. Artist's Story:
Leigh P. Cooke is a British surface-pattern designer known for transforming everyday objects into elegant still lifes for luxury houses. After designing for Salvatore Ferragamo (1998–2003), he began collaborating with Hermès in 2001 and has created multiple beloved carrés (including In the Pocket, Fleurs et Plumes, Flower Power, Dragonflies). His work is prized for careful arrangement, technical draftsmanship and a quietly playful sensibility.
